MAUREEN AMONSON

In a world where tradition meets innovation, crochet artist Maureen Amonson of Cotton Wool Workshop weaves magic into every stitch. With a passion that began in childhood, she transforms vibrant yarn into intricate textures and captivating designs, breathing new life into the age-old craft of crochet. From cozy blankets to delicate accessories and dolls, Maureen’s creations reflect a unique blend of personal storytelling and artistic expression, showcasing not just skill, but a deep connection to the materials and methods used. Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, she draws inspiration from making things by hand that feel meaningful and lasting, creating pieces that resonate with warmth and character.

Join us as we delve into the journey of Maureen Amonson, discovering the inspirations, challenges,

and triumphs that define her artistic path in the vibrant world of crochet.

Where were you born and raised?
I spent my early years being raised in Malta. I was surrounded by women who spun their own wool and made their families sweaters and blankets. My mom even knew how to make lace. Being surrounded by such creative women, it felt natural to pick up a similar hobby.

What or who inspired you to crochet?
I was inspired by the idea of making things by hand that feel meaningful and lasting. Crochet became a creative outlet during a transitional time in my life, and it quickly grew into something much bigger—combining creativity, storytelling, and the joy of making items meant to be loved and passed down. I also enjoy the seeing how a ball of yarn can be transformed into a beautiful blanket or a doll that bring so much joy.

Are there particular artists that influence you?
I’m most inspired by fiber artists, illustrators, and designers who embrace whimsy, texture, and nostalgia. Children’s book illustrations, vintage toys, and traditional craft techniques all play a role in shaping the playful, heirloom feel of my work.

Where can people see your work?
You can find my work at local markets throughout Utah and online through Instagram at @cottonwool_workshop, where I share new pieces, behind-the-scenes process, and upcoming events.

What other interests or hobbies do you enjoy?
Outside of crocheting, I love spending time with my family & spending time in the mountains with my young kiddos.

As a vendor/businesswoman, what are some of your most enjoyable experiences?
One of the most rewarding parts is connecting with customers in person—especially seeing children light up when they spot a piece made just for them. Building a small business rooted in community, creativity, and craftsmanship has been incredibly fulfilling.

Do you have any advice for someone just starting out as a vendor?
There will be days—and even entire markets—where turnout is low and it can make you question whether it’s worth continuing. Those moments can feel discouraging, but they’re a natural part of the journey. Don’t give up. Start small, stay consistent, and allow your business to evolve over time. Focus on creating work you genuinely love, listen to feedback, and remember that growth rarely happens overnight. The relationships you build—with customers and fellow vendors—are just as important as the products you sell, and often matter most in the long run.

What is something about you that people would be surprised to know?
CottonWool Workshop started as a creative side project, but it quickly became a passion and a dream. I continue to grow alongside my family and a small team of women who help bring my designs to life.
